The Island Weights is a collection of poems by Sky Hopinka, published by Stereo Editions as a letterpress limited edition.
Relating to the four water spirits holding the earth in place, one of many stories in Ho-Chunk cosmology, The Island Weights (Wijirawaséwe) explores language to conjure these beings, seeking direction while wandering through homeland boundaries and bodies of water.
Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk Nation/Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians) creates video, photo, and text work centered around personal positions of Indigenous homeland and landscape, designs of language as containers of culture expressed through personal, documentary, and non fiction forms of media. His work has been presented at international film festivals, art biennales, and exhibitions. He received the 2020 Alpert Award for Film/Video and the 2022 Infinity Award in Art from the International Center of Photography. He was a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University, Sundance Art of Nonfiction, Guggenheim, Art Matters, and at Forge Project, and was a 2022 MacArther Fellow.
